The BBC is reporting this week that last year, for the first time ever, UK Box Office takings surpassed the £1bn barrier. Considering the economic crisis of the last few years, and the increasing number of people finding themselves out of work, it is perhaps a little surprising. There are several factors at work, however.

Traditionally, January is the cinematic dumping ground. A slow month, it is usually the time when the dregs of the past year are put out to seed. That’s in the US. Here in the UK, we are often a bit luckier. The Autumn months in the States are when the Oscar hopefuls start being released, films which we quite often don’t get on these shores until some time later. That seems to be particularly the case this time around. In the next month, we see UK releases of some of the brightest and best of the Academy Award contenders. It’s going to be a great month.
