Has Thor Struck Hammer Blow In Superhero Wars?

This weekend Thor managed to stay in the top 3 at the box office, adding another $15.5m to its haul, for a total domestic gross so far of $145m. Thor’s box office performance so far isn’t a patch on many of the comic-book adaptations we’ve seen recently, but as a second tier hero played by a virtual unknown, it is a pretty good number. More Animated Audiences Emerging

This past weekend, the new animated feature from 20th Century Fox, Rio, won the US box office with a $39M opening, beating highly fancied Scre4m into second place with a disappointing $19M. There was a lot of expectation from the fourth movie in the Scream franchise. The first three movies grossed around $300 million dollars between them, with the second and third installments opening with over $30M each, and that nearly 15 years ago. Continue reading

Fluent in Film’s Top Ten Films of 2010

What better way to kick off a new movie blog than a look back at the best films from the last 12 months? I remember compiling my best of 2009 list, and feeling that there really hadn’t been that many great films in the preceding 12 months. This was reflected in the fact that i struggled to come up with ten that deserved to be on such a list. This past year has been an improvement at least, as i found myself having to whittle downwards from a list of 15.

Just to be clear, my criteria for eligibility in this list is a 2010 UK theatre release date, meaning that Oscar hopefuls such as Black Swan, 127 Hours and The Fighter are not eligible even if i had seen them. I haven’t of course seen every film released this year, so if some of your favourites are missing it doesn’t necessarily mean that they didn’t make the cut, i may just not have caught them yet.
